TYPES OF HOT WATER HEATERS

There are 4 main types of water heating systems:
  • heat pump
  • gas (natural or LPG) — storage or instantaneous
  • solar — electric or gas (natural or LPG) boosted
  • electric — storage or instantaneous.

Heat pump

A heat pump transfers heat from the air to your hot water tank. They extract heat from the environment (air, water or ground) to heat water. Heat pump water heaters cost more to purchase than conventional hot water heaters however they save energy and can reduce energy bills.

Heat pumps operate like a refrigerator in reverse. Ambient air heats a refrigerant, which converts to a gas. The gas is compressed, expelling heat, which is transferred to the water. The refrigerant is expanded back to a liquid and the cycle repeats.

Gas hot water systems

Gas hot water systems have significantly fewer emissions when compared with electric hot water systems.

They have quicker heat recovery times and generally require a smaller tank than a comparable electric storage system.

When choosing a gas hot water system, look for the gas star rating. The more stars, the more energy efficient and cheaper to run.

Storage hot water systems

The most commonly used hot water heating system. Water is heated to a temperature (normally between 60 and 70 degrees) and stored ready for use in a tank for when it is required.

Storage tanks are made from copper, glass (enamel) lined steel or stainless steel. Warranties range from 5 to 10 years.

There are gas storage units and electric storage.

Solar hot water systems

Solar water heaters rely on the sun to heat your water. The unit is made up of solar collectors and an insulated storage tank. Solar collectors are generally positioned on your home's roof facing north. Storage tanks can be kept inside your roof or on ground level. They can provide up to 90% of your hot water for free, without greenhouse gas emissions. Although the upfront costs are higher they can save energy and reduce energy bills.

To supply hot water on cloudy days or when demand exceeds supply, most solar water heaters come with a booster (gas or electric).

Electric hot water systems

Electric hot water systems work on the principle that the water used is heated by electricity. Silverwater Plumbing can help you by accessing the most suitable type of tank to use for your house or property. Customers should be choosing a tank matched to the optimum power wattage based to their requirements of their property's capabilities.

Instantaneous hot water (also known as continuous flow)

As instantaneous hot water systems only heat the water that’s required, they don’t need a storage tank. They don’t experience the heat/energy losses of storage systems. Instantaneous hot water systems can operate on natural gas, LPG or electricity. Gas models are available with either electronic ignition or a pilot flame. They can be mounted externally or internally if the space is adequately ventilated.

Because continuous flow systems heat water as it is used, they can’t run out of hot water. They can be fitted with sophisticated temperature controls, including controls for the desired water temperature at the point of use (e.g. in the shower). As water isn’t overheated and the hot water doesn’t need to be diluted with cold water to achieve a suitable temperature, energy savings are made and there are lower risks of burns or scalds.

Master Plumbers in the Castle Hill Area

Tips for Hiring a Plumber  A home is never complete if minimum facilities for a comfortable living are not provided. It is imperative that the plumbing in your home is done properly to avoid pipe leaks, clogged sinks, toilets, etc. Leaking pipes and clogged drains will reduce the visual appeal, increase foul odour, and can even damage wooden articles. In order to avoid this, you should hire a professional plumber. Many of you might have jumped and grabbed a plunger on noticing a clogged toilet in your home. Although such measures could relieve you of temporary problems, you are not removing the cause of the block, and this could lead to bigger issues such as burst drain pipes. If you hired a professional plumber instead, he/she will identify the root cause of the problem and set it right. Some people are not keen to call a plumber when they see a minor leakage in their home. This is not a wise decision as leaks could lead to a bigger damage and end up costing more for repairs. It is
